Multi colour printing with a single colour printer

Change your filament part-way through a print.
This works great with raised or sunken text. eg black background & glow in the dark raised text.
I've also made a flag with the 3 colours at 1mm height intervals. (figjam) :)

Cut the 1st filament flush with the head and hand feed the 2nd filament until it's well and truly taken.
Depending on the size and settings of the job, the 2nd colour will be coming out within a layer or two.

Hint:
Have a 2nd spool set up and ready to feed. I recommend a spool rack and a 2nd feeder tube.
If you can't do this, cut the 1st filament 100mm or so from the head.
This will give you time to set up the 2nd one, then trim off the 1st.

Just a tip,  in order to switch out the filament mid print you can to go 3D Print -> Maintenance -> Pause Print, if you just click stop from the toolbar it will cancel the print. From there you can use the "Withdraw" to remove the last colour, and then "extrude" to put your new colour in. This will eliminate any layer gaps and give you much more accuracy for where you want the colour to change.

Thank you the information, this topic is pretty old but still wanted to know which 3D printer would be best to purchase for multi color 3D printing. I am into 3D printing service https://www.customprototypes.ca/3d-printing and we have SLA 3D printers, multi color printing is not possible with them but sure painting or dying is easy, you may check it here https://www.customprototypes.ca/single-post/3D-printed-stained-glass-window its all resin based 3D printed, some portions are spray painted and some dyed but further i am looking into commercial 3D printers that can print into multi color. Any suggestions are welcome!

Thank you!
